Introduction to Sailing
OBJECTIVE
To discover the sport of sailing in a relaxed setting with a competent coach to insure safety & enjoyment.

Basic Crew Standard
OBJECTIVE
To be able to act as competent crew while cruising safely in familiar waters aboard a sloop rigged keelboat of 6 - 10 metres in moderate wind and sea conditions by day.

Basic Cruising Standard
OBJECTIVE
To be able to act as competent crew while cruising safely in familiar waters aboard a sloop rigged keelboat of 6 - 10 metres in moderate wind and sea conditions by day.
PREREQUISITES

Intermediate Crew Standard
OBJECTIVE
To be able to cruise safely in familiar waters as both skipper and crew of a sailing yacht of 8 - 12 meters in moderate wind and sea conditions by day. Emphasizes on-the-water skills at a level acceptable for bareboat chartering.
PREREQUISITES
Basic Crew Standard or Basic Cruising Standard.
It is recommended the student have a recognized first aid certificate and a VHF radio operator’s certificate.
Note: To maximize the
likelihood of successfully completing the Intermediate Cruising Standard, a
student should have:
a) Had experience as skipper of at least ten day sails (or equivalent), and
b) Applied the knowledge and practiced the skills in the Basic Cruising
Standard.
Intermediate Cruising Standard
OBJECTIVE
To be able to cruise safely in familiar waters as both skipper and crew of a sailing yacht of 8 - 12 meters in moderate wind and sea conditions by day. Emphasizes on-the-water skills at a level acceptable for bareboat chartering.

Coastal Navigation Standard
OBJECTIVES
To be able to demonstrate the navigational theory required to safely navigate a sailing cruiser in coastal or inland waters. The concepts are practically introduced in the Intermediate standard and practically tested in the Advanced standard. The standard is recommended to be completed prior to the Intermediate standard.
PREREQUISITES
None.
This is one of the standards required by CYA as a prerequisite to taking the Advanced Cruising Standard. You can attain
this standard by passing the CYA Coastal Navigation Examination.
Advanced Cruising Standard
OBJECTIVE
To be able to act safely as skipper and crew of a sailing cruiser of 8 - 15 metres, operating by day and night in coastal or inland water in any weather.
PREREQUISITES
Basic Cruising, Intermediate Cruising and Coastal Navigation Standards; Red Cross or St. John Ambulance Emergency First Aid Certificate and a VHF radio certificate (Radio Operator's Restricted Certificate - Maritime Voluntary). Minimum course time for teaching this Standard is six days.
Note: To maximize the likelihood
of successfully completing the Advanced Cruising Standard, a student should
have:
a) had experience as a skipper equivalent to at least two seasons or twenty
days of cruising, and
b) applied the knowledge and practiced the skills in the Intermediate Cruising and Coastal Navigation Standards.
Advanced Navigation Standard
OBJECTIVES
To be able to safely navigate a vessel in all conditions of visibility and weather in accordance with a prepared passage plan, applying the principles and techniques of safe navigation by electronic instruments and radar.
PREREQUISITES
Coastal Navigation Standard and Intermediate Cruising Standard or Intermediate Powerboat Standard.
Celestial Navigation Standard
OBJECTIVE
To be able to demonstrate the celestial navigation theory required to safely navigate a sailing cruiser on an offshore passage. The Standard is applied practically in the Offshore Cruising Standard.
PREREQUISITES

OBJECTIVE
To be able to safely act as skipper & crew in a sailing cruiser on an offshore passage using Celestial Navigation.
PREREQUISITES
Advanced Cruising Standard and Celestial Navigation Standard, VHF Radio certificate(Radio Operator's Restricted Certificate-Maritime Voluntary, Red Cross or St. John Ambulance Standard First Aid Certificate and a nationally recognized certificate in CPR-Level "B" or higher. Completing the Advanced Navigation Standard is highly recommended
